Arezzo is a city with a population of 100.000 people…still is such a lovely place to live in or to learn the Tuscan lifestyle! The medieval and Reinassance very well preserved historic center was the charming location for the movie “Life is Beautiful”(La Vita è Bella) directed by Roberto Benigni who won the Academy Award in 1999.
Arezzo has been inhabited since the 8-7 C BC, first by the Etruscans and later by the Romans as the many objects in the Archeological museum and the Roman Amphiteatre give evidence. The famous Minister of Culture of Emperor Augustus’, Maecenas, was from Arezzo and the word still means in many modern languages “art sponsor”!
It has been the birth place of the Benedictine monk Guido Monaco or Guido d’Arezzo who invented the music notes in the 11C and of Petrarca, Giorgio Vasari, while a great artists and a mathematician like Piero della Francesca left here his masterpiece. It’s the stunning Renaissance fresco Cycle of The Legend of the True Cross considered a milestone of the universal art history!
A guided walking tour of Arezzo encompasses Piazza San Francesco with the Church San Francesco where Piero della Francesca left his masterpiece, The Pieve Church, Piazza Grande, the Duomo and The San Domenico Church housing a Crucifix painted by Cimabue.
